For golf, published range guides run from 40 ft municipal specifications to a stated 45 to 65 ft for most ranges. For MUGAs, the surprise is that no official height exists at all. Search results for this question are almost entirely product pages selling 3 to 6 m systems without saying why: this guide collects what is actually published, with every figure attributed, and says plainly where no figure exists.

Football: the FA's heights are the only official ones
The FA's Guide to 3G Football Turf Pitch Design Principles and Layouts is the one governing-body document that commits to numbers: "The FA recommended fence height on all sides of the 3G FTP is 4.5m"; on grass pitches, "4.5m high ball stop fencing should be provided behind the two 11-a-side goals", with an additional 3 m of ball stop fencing on sides where the boundary is close to the pitch. The same document dimensions spectator rails at 1.2 m, rising to 2 m behind the goals, and pairs rebound boards of at least 1.2 m with mesh continuing up to 4.5 m. If you are specifying football containment in the UK, these are the figures to put in writing.
MUGAs: what Sport England actually publishes (and does not)
Almost every fencing page asserts a "standard" MUGA height and implies it comes from Sport England. We readSport England's MUGA design guidance (Part 1) in full: its fencing section describes the functions of the enclosure and dimensions the gates, and gives no fence height figure anywhere. What does exist in print: the SAPCA Code of Practice for outdoor MUGAs shows example layouts with 4 m high twin bar fencing including 1.2 m rebound panels, and recommends goal recesses with posts equivalent to the main perimeter fence height so netting can be tensioned across; and fencing installers (Jacksons, among others) describe 3 m as the most common height they sell. Treat 3 m as market practice and 4 m as a documented example, not as standards.
Golf: garden, club and range are three different problems
The published ladder: a UK installer guide (Collins Nets) gives 6 m for the sides and rear of club practice areas and 8 to 10 m or more for range perimeters, noting side containment is "calculated on ball trajectory" without publishing the calculation. In the US, US Netting's range guide states most golf ranges use 45 to 65 ft, and a published municipal specification, thePease Golf Course netting replacement IFB (2025), is precise: 40 ft posts above ground, nine 50 by 20 ft net panels, #18 nylon at 1 in mesh. What determines the height, according to the sources that publish factors
- Sport, ball size and speed: golf and hockey drive taller nets than football (Safetynet365).
- Distance from pitch to boundary: the FA's extra 3 m side fencing applies where the boundary is close.
- Ball trajectory and distance from the tee: the stated basis of range side heights (Collins Nets, US Netting).
- Topography: height may change along a range depending on landscape (US Netting).
- Wind load: taller systems need wind lines and heavier steel (Gourock, from 30 ft).
- Neighbours and visual impact: fencing sellers note very tall enclosures read as hostile; planning conditions can constrain colour and height.
What nobody publishes
Three real gaps, stated plainly. No height-versus-distance formula exists in print from any federation, standards body or seller we reviewed. No British or European standard sets ball stop netting heights (the tennis-equipment standard covers posts and nets for play, not perimeters). And neither England Golf nor the R&A publishes range perimeter guidance: the liveliest thread on the question is a golf forum one, which is exactly why written, attributed specifications matter more here than anywhere.

Read against the official column, the pattern is clear: the market clusters at 3 to 6 m because that is what standard steelwork ships at, not because a sport requires it. Specify from the sport and the site, then buy the height you specified: netting is cut to size, so the ball stop netting itself costs the same per square metre at 3 m or at 6 m.

One widely repeated figure was excluded: a 2.75 m tennis enclosure height attributed to LTA guidance, which we could not find in the LTA document itself.
