Batting cage twine gauge by level: what sellers publish, and where they disagree

Search for the right twine gauge and you will find confident answers: #36 for high school, #42 for college, #60 for commercial. Those recommendations are real and they are published, so we have put them side by side with their sources. What nobody puts side by side is the break strength behind them, and that is where it falls apart: the same gauge number carries figures that differ by seventy percent depending on who publishes it.

In short. The level recommendations are seller positions, not standards, and no federation publishes a batting cage twine gauge at all. Use them to bracket your choice, then specify the twine in millimetres as well as in gauge, and ask what any break strength figure was measured on.

The two agree on the shape: heavier gauge as the hitter gets stronger. They do not agree on the boundaries. Practice Sports puts #36 as a minimum for high school; Batting Cages Inc lists #36 and #42 across the same middle school to high school range, which means #36 is a floor for one and a midpoint for the other. Neither is wrong. They are commercial recommendations, and reading them as a standard is the error.

Where the numbers stop being comparable

Batting Cages Inc states 220 lb breaking strength for #42, and 140 lb for #24. Our own twine gauge chart compiles375 lb for #42 from two other published sources, and 250 lb for #24. Same gauge numbers, figures that differ by roughly seventy percent.

That is not a case of one source being wrong. It is a case of nobody saying what they measured. A break strength can be quoted for a single strand, for the finished twine, or at the knot, and the knot figure is always the lowest: Nets & More publishes 375 lb twine and 300 lb knot for the same #42. None of these sources states a test standard. Our chart shows the disagreement instead of averaging it away, because an average of incomparable numbers is a fabricated number.

The gauge to millimetre trap

If you buy across the US and metric systems, the conversion is the part that bites. The practice cage combination we hold factory samples for is 20 mm mesh in 2 mm twine. Read against the Gourock and Practice Sports published diameters, 2 mm sits at about #21. Read against the Nets & More figures, 1.98 mm is#30.

The same physical twine lands two gauge numbers apart depending on whose table you open. A quote written only in gauge is therefore ambiguous by construction, and a quote written only in millimetres cannot be checked against a US seller chart. Write both.

How to specify it so the quote is comparable

  • Give the diameter in millimetres and the gauge you were quoted. Two systems, one line: "2 mm twine, quoted elsewhere as #21".
  • State the level and whether a pitching machine is used. It is the variable the seller recommendations are really indexed on, and it is field one of the seven an accurate quote needs.
  • Ask what any break strength figure refers to. Single strand, finished twine or knot, and whether a test standard applies. A supplier who cannot say should not have quoted the number.
  • Do not average two sellers' figures. If they disagree, that is information: it means at least one of them is not measuring what you think.
